An exciting day awaited fans heading to the Emirates for a game that never disappoints; newly crowned World Champions Arsenal set to face WSL top spot holders Manchester City. After a last minute 3-2 defeat in the reverse fixture in the first half of the season, Arsenal were ready to fight for the full three points. Meanwhile, City – who were already sat 12 points clear at the top – were looking to wrap up the title race this afternoon.
After a early scare from ex Arsenal player Vivianne Miedema looking to score within the first 10 seconds, Arsenal defended strongly and dominated the pitch, preventing many chances for the blues to counterattack. Arsenals dominance was rewarded early on wh en their first real attempt on goal was given in the 17th minute by a beautiful assist from Mariona, passed through to Olivia Smith who fought to go round City defender Rebecca Knaak before rounding keeper Ayaka Yamashita to slot the ball home into an empty goal.

Arsenal continued to be the stronger team as their front line put City’s defence to the test, with a near save from Yamashita just before halftime kept the scoreline 1-0, despite Russo’s good attempt on goal.
City came back after half time with more determination and improvement up front, gaining a few more opportunities with a goal even going in curtesy of Miedema, however the whistle had already been called for a foul on Katie McCabe, having had her shirt tugged.

Controversy arose however when Arsenals Mariona acted as the last defender against Lauren Hemp and took her down from ten yards in the 61st minute. Despite the City fans calls for a red card, the referee dismissed it immediately leaving Arsenal lucky to remain 11 players up.
Despite City’s efforts, Arsenal remained the stronger team today, carrying their momentum from their Champions Cup win last weekend and with help of the home crowd were able to utilise on City’s weaknesses. With a game still in hand they have left the door open just enough for a chance of an upset in the fight for the title .
